JOS – The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) has officially commissioned 80 newly constructed housing units at the Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos, Plateau State. The project, which was inaugurated on Wednesday, is part of a broader initiative by the Nigerian Army to improve the living conditions of personnel and their families across various formations nationwide. ADDRESSING INFRASTRUCTURE DEFICITS During the commissioning ceremony, the Chief of Army Staff emphasized that the provision of decent and befitting accommodation is a critical factor in maintaining the morale and operational effectiveness of troops. He noted that the military high command is dedicated to addressing the long-standing accommodation deficit that has persisted in many barracks across the country. According to the COAS, the project was designed to meet modern standards, ensuring that officers and soldiers have a conducive environment to reside in while performing their demanding duties. He stated that the welfare of personnel remains a top priority in his command philosophy, as he believes that a well-motivated soldier is essential for the successful execution of national security objectives. SUSTAINING OPERATIONAL READINESS The new housing development is expected to significantly ease the burden on personnel stationed in the Jos axis. Army leadership highlighted that the construction of these units aligns with the federal government's directive to prioritize the welfare of security agencies as a motivation for enhanced performance in the fight against insecurity. The project features a mix of two-bedroom and three-bedroom apartments, complete with modern utility services, water supply, and electricity, aimed at creating a self-sufficient residential community within the cantonment. A CALL FOR CONTINUED EXCELLENCE Addressing the troops present at the commissioning, the COAS commended the personnel for their resilience and commitment to maintaining peace and stability in Plateau State. He urged the beneficiaries of the new housing units to ensure proper maintenance of the facilities, emphasizing that these assets are critical national infrastructure. The Chief of Army Staff concluded by reaffirming that the Army leadership will continue to pursue similar welfare-driven projects as part of a comprehensive strategy to boost troop morale, improve professional standards, and ensure that soldiers and their families are adequately supported throughout their service.
