Delegations from Iran-backed militant groups Hezbollah and Hamas attended funeral ceremonies for slain Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran on Saturday, meeting separately with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, according to state media. Araghchi shared photos of the meetings on his official Telegram channel, showing him alongside Hamas political bureau chairman Mohammed Ismail Darwish. Iran began several days of public mourning on Saturday for Khamenei, who was killed at age 86 alongside several family members in a US-Israeli strike on his compound on February 28 β€” the opening salvo of a war that has since reshaped the region. His flag-draped coffin, along with those of relatives killed in the same strike, lay in state at the Grand Mosalla religious complex, where mourners beat their chests and chanted for revenge against the United States and Israel. Authorities estimate the multi-city ceremonies, spanning Tehran, Qom and Mashhad, could draw upward of 15 to 20 million people before Khamenei's burial next week, with related commemorations also planned in Iraq. The Hezbollah delegation, led by senior official and former minister Mohammed Fneish, included officials as well as families of members killed or wounded in the group's recent conflict with Israel. Hamas's delegation, led by Darwish, also included senior bureau member Bassem Naim. Representatives from roughly 30 countries, including China and several of Iran's Caucasus neighbors, are expected to take part in the funeral proceedings. The ceremonies come as renewed US-Iran negotiations, including talks over Iran's nuclear program, are reportedly set to resume July 11, following mediation efforts by Qatar and Pakistan. Tensions remain elevated on multiple fronts: Israeli forces reported killing an armed Hezbollah operative in southern Lebanon this weekend, and Iran's ambassador to China said Saturday that Tehran intends to impose new transit fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz β€” a move Washington has rejected β€” despite a prior agreement guaranteeing free passage for commercial vessels through the strait for 60 days.
