Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigeria's security agencies for the successful rescue of the schoolchildren and teachers who were abducted in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.


A Successful Rescue Operation

The rescue, confirmed on Friday, July 10, 2026, brought an end to 56 days of captivity for 39 pupils and five teachers. The victims had been abducted on May 15, 2026, during an attack on schools in the Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota communities.


In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the mission as a "huge relief" and a clear demonstration of the Federal Governmentโ€™s resolve to combat insecurity.

  • Coordinated Effort: The rescue was the result of an intelligence-led operation involving the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Air Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Police Force.
  • No Ransom Paid: The Presidency clarified that the rescue was achieved without any ransom payments or concessions to the abductors. A notorious kingpin whose release the kidnappers had demanded remains in custody and is currently facing prosecution.
  • Casualties and Arrests: During the operation, security forces arrested eight suspects and neutralized others. The military also noted that while the rescue was successful, it unfortunately involved some sacrifices, with reports indicating that some security personnel lost their lives during the mission.
  • Victim Recovery: The rescued victims are currently receiving medical attention and psychosocial support to recover from the trauma of their 56-day ordeal.

National Response

The rescue has been widely celebrated as a victory for the governmentโ€™s collective security approach. President Tinubu, who personally expressed delight at the news, has directed emergency agencies to work alongside the Oyo State Government to provide comprehensive support for the victims.


Governor Sanwo-Olu joined other leaders across the country, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and the Chairman of the Progressive Governors' Forum, Senator Hope Uzodimma, in praising the resilience of the security forces and offering solidarity to the affected families.
