The Nigerian Federal Government has intensified its efforts to combat human trafficking and irregular migration through a new, technology-driven enforcement strategy. This initiative, coordinated by the Ministry of Interior and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), aims to disrupt illegal migration routes while scaling up the repatriation of stranded citizens.


Technology-Driven Border Security

In July 2026, the Federal Government launched an advanced AI-integrated tracking system designed to modernize border management. This system allows the NIS to analyze ten years of travel data, identifying patterns of visa overstays and suspicious movement. Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo stated that this transition enables the NIS to function as an "internal security enabler," providing the government with the granular data required to monitor and secure the nation's borders more effectively.


Collaborative Repatriation and Reintegration

The government continues to prioritize the safe return of citizens caught in transit through dangerous migration corridors. Working in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) under the Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) programme, thousands of Nigerians have been repatriated this year.


  • Structured Support: Rather than simple evacuation, returnees now receive case-managed support. This includes immediate medical and psychosocial screening, followed by tailored reintegration packages such as vocational training and business capital grants.
  • Counter-Trafficking Operations: The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has ramped up its prosecution of trafficking networks. By targeting the recruitersβ€”particularly those operating through deceptive online platformsβ€”the agency aims to dismantle the infrastructure of human smuggling at the source.


Awareness and Prevention

The federal strategy is also focusing on long-term prevention through public sensitization. New initiatives, such as the "Catch Them Young" program, target educational institutions to inform students about the realities of visa fraud and the severe risks of irregular travel. Federal authorities emphasize that while they support legal migration, the focus remains on ensuring that citizens are not misled by trafficking syndicates into dangerous and potentially life-threatening journeys.
