PORTUGAL BRACES FOR EXTREME HEATWAVE AS RED ALERTS ISSUED
LISBON โ Portugal is preparing for a period of extreme, record-challenging heat as the national weather agency, the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), has issued red alerts for several coastal and northern regions. Following a recent, record-breaking heatwave that gripped much of Europe, this new surge in temperature is expected to persist for at least a week, placing significant strain on both infrastructure and public health.
RED ALERTS AND TEMPERATURE PROJECTIONS
The IPMA has designated Lisbon and Setรบbal for red alertsโthe highest warning level indicating an extreme weather riskโstarting July 2. These warnings are scheduled to extend to the Leiria and Coimbra regions on July 3. Authorities have cautioned that temperatures in these areas could soar to 44 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the remainder of the country is under orange alerts, signaling moderate to high weather risks as the heat spreads inland and northward.
A PROLONGED THREAT
Meteorologists are particularly concerned about the duration of this heatwave, which is forecast to last at least seven days. A critical factor compounding the danger is the lack of nighttime cooling. Coastal regions, which typically benefit from refreshing sea breezes, are expected to remain stifling, with overnight lows hovering between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius. This lack of relief overnight limits the bodyโs ability to recover from daytime heat, increasing the health risk for the elderly, children, and those with underlying medical conditions.
GOVERNMENT RESPONSE AND PUBLIC SAFETY
In response to the mounting risk, the Portuguese government has activated its 2026-2027 National Seasonal Health Preparedness and Response Plan. Secretary of State for Health Ana Povo emphasized that the crisis requires a broad, community-led response rather than one reliant solely on hospitals. Municipalities are currently working to identify and open sheltersโsuch as public buildings, community centers, and air-conditioned spacesโto provide refuge for vulnerable citizens.
Health authorities have issued strict guidelines for the public, including:
* Hydration: Drink at least 1.5 liters of water daily, regardless of thirst.
* Sun Avoidance: Limit outdoor activity and direct sun exposure during peak hours, specifically between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
* Environmental Control: Keep shutters closed during the day to block heat and ventilate homes only during cooler early morning or late evening hours.
* Safety Awareness: Wear light-colored, loose clothing and remain alert for symptoms of heat-related illness.
With the extreme heat expected to linger well into next week, the Portuguese government continues to coordinate with local authorities to mitigate the potential for heat-related mortality and maintain public safety across all regions.
