President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on his unanimous re-election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council, following the organisation's 147th and 148th Council Sessions in Brussels, Belgium. In a statement issued Friday by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described the re-election as a historic endorsement of Adeniyi's leadership and a reflection of Nigeria's growing stature in global customs administration. The president said his recent approval of Adeniyi's tenure extension as Comptroller-General was driven by a desire to sustain the reform momentum underway at the NCS, and that the international customs community's overwhelming support validates Adeniyi's work strengthening institutional capacity, modernizing customs operations and positioning Nigeria among the world's leading customs administrations. Tinubu specifically praised the agency's revenue generation gains, improved border security, trade facilitation efforts and homegrown technology reforms such as the B'Odogwu customs clearance platform, along with the implementation of the Authorised Economic Operator Programme and expanded use of non-intrusive inspection technology. "Adeniyi's unanimous re-election is not only a personal honour to Adeniyi, but also a recognition of Nigeria's growing influence in global customs administration," Tinubu said, adding that he expects the second term to "deepen international collaboration, promote secure and efficient global trade, and bring even greater honour to our country." Adeniyi made history a year earlier as the first Nigerian to lead the 73-year-old WCO Council, whose 186-member body serves as the highest decision-making authority in global customs administration, succeeding South African Revenue Service Commissioner Edward Kieswetter on July 1, 2025. His current tenure as NCS Comptroller-General was previously extended by six months, with the presidency saying at the time the extension would allow him to consolidate implementation of the National Single Window initiative and ensure an orderly succession within the service.
