The Centre for Public Integrity (CPI) has sharply criticized activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore over his ongoing attacks on the Department of State Services (DSS), calling his remarks hypocritical and out of step with what it describes as a reformed agency. In a statement signed by Comrade Job Samuel Danfulani, the group argued that Sowore, who it says now enjoys full civil liberties under the current DSS leadership, has responded to the agency's professionalism with "blackmail and insults." The CPI drew a contrast between Sowore's treatment today and his experience under former President Muhammadu Buhari, when he was arrested in August 2019 over the #RevolutionNow protests, held for more than four months despite meeting his bail conditions, and later rearrested inside a courtroom with prolonged movement restrictions. Danfulani questioned whether Sowore could fairly equate that DSS with the one operating under current Director-General Oluwatosin Ajayi, calling it ironic that Sowore "now moves freely from one event to another... yet continues to attack the same institution." Responding to Sowore's complaints about detention conditions โ€” including claims he was held alongside inmates with tuberculosis โ€” Danfulani was dismissive. "Kuje Prison is not a hotel," he said. "A correctional facility is for detention, not luxury." He also condemned Sowore's characterization of security personnel as "stupid" and "criminal," calling such language toward officers who "daily sacrifice their lives" unacceptable. The group went further, alleging that Sowore's presidential ambitions serve mainly as a distraction and that his political party functions largely as a personal vehicle, pointing to what it described as his simultaneous occupancy of multiple leadership roles within the AAC โ€” including national chairman, youth leader, women's leader, organizing secretary and publicity secretary. The CPI urged Nigerians not to take Sowore seriously and called for broader public support of the DSS, military and police as they carry out their security mandates. The exchange comes as Sowore separately continues to face prosecution over social-media posts referring to President Bola Tinubu as a "criminal" โ€” a case that led to a revocation of his bail after a missed court appearance, though he was later granted fresh bail under stricter conditions. Sowore has maintained that the prosecution is politically motivated and aimed at punishing him rather than allowing due process to run its course.
