Kano State has taken a significant step in its campaign against substance abuse, with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency officially disposing of more than 12 metric tonnes of various prohibited substances. The destruction exercise, which occurred on Monday, involved over 12,233 kilograms of narcotics and psychotropic drugs. These materials were seized during a series of intelligence-driven enforcement actions carried out across the state and at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport. During the event, the Kano Strategic Command of the agency noted that these seizures are a direct result of their ongoing efforts to dismantle drug networks and prevent illicit materials from reaching local communities. The command highlighted that this move is part of a broader strategy to maintain public safety and prosecute those involved in the distribution of dangerous substances. Governor Abba Yusuf, who attended the event, commended the agency for its consistent operations. He stated that the state government is fully committed to supporting these enforcement efforts and remains focused on combining security measures with rehabilitation programs. The governor mentioned that the state is actively working on youth reintegration through initiatives like the Safe Corridor Project and the provision of support for rehabilitation centers. According to official data from the agency, the Kano command has recorded more than 900 arrests between January and June 2026. This period has also seen the seizure of over 2.5 tonnes of additional illicit substances, with several dozen convictions secured as a result of successful prosecutions. The leadership of the agency emphasized that this public destruction serves as a clear message to criminal groups that their operations will continue to be met with firm action, and the agency will not relent in its goal of removing these substances from circulation.
