The Ekiti State Police Command announced Saturday that it had rescued the worshippers abducted during an armed attack on a Christ Apostolic Church crusade in Eda-Oniyo, Ilejemeje Local Government Area, more than two months after the incident. Command spokesperson SP Sunday Abutu said the victims were freed through sustained intelligence-led operations involving the Nigeria Police Force, the military, other security agencies, the Amotekun Corps, local hunters and the Ekiti State Government, with the release taking place around midnight on Friday. The attack occurred on April 28, 2026, when suspected gunmen stormed an overnight open-air crusade, killing the officiating pastor and abducting 15 worshippers, including women, children and an elderly woman. Police confirmed that one of the captives died while in custody of the kidnappers; the remaining 14 were freed in what a security analyst described as critical physical and emotional condition. The rescued victims have been taken to hospital for medical examination and treatment. The kidnappers had initially demanded a โ‚ฆ1 billion ransom, later lowering it to โ‚ฆ50 million. Community members reportedly raised and paid โ‚ฆ10.5 million along with other demanded items, but the victims remained in captivity, prompting public protests and a House of Representatives resolution urging security agencies to intensify rescue efforts. Ekiti Commissioner of Police Falade Adegoroye commended the collaboration among the various security agencies involved, calling the rescue a product of effective inter-agency coordination. He also credited Governor Biodun Oyebanji's continued support for security operations and thanked residents for supplying information that aided the effort. Adegoroye said efforts to track down and apprehend the perpetrators have been intensified, and urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
