MAKURDI, Nigeria โ€” Palpable tension has gripped several communities in Benue State following the targeted killing of the state Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Alhaji Ardo-Risku Mohammed, and his associate, Yakubu Isah, by unidentified gunmen. The fatal ambush occurred on Friday afternoon at Okudu village along the Okwudu-Ogoli Road in Otukpo Local Government Area, just hours after the community leader had successfully participated in a crucial regional peace dialogue. Ambushed on the Return Journey According to local administrative and security sources, Alhaji Mohammed had spent the morning attending a peace and security meeting in the neighboring Ohimini Local Government Area. The dialogue, which was formally convened by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Idekpa, Ohimini, was aimed at resolving recurring communal clashes and brokering peace following a recent violent crisis in Ayunne community that left several people dead. The meeting involving Fulani herders and community leaders was reported to have ended successfully with fruitful resolutions. However, as the MACBAN chairman and his companion journeyed back from the venue around 2:00 PM, armed assailants emerged from the bushes in Otukpo territory and opened fire on their vehicle, killing both men on the spot. The deceased's eldest son, Idris Mohammed, confirmed the tragedy in a late-night phone interview, stating that the family had since recovered the bodies of his father and Isah for burial arrangements in the Oyangede community. Fears of Reprisals Spark Widespread Panic The brazen assassination of a prominent peace advocate has triggered widespread panic across Otukpo and Ohimini local government areas, with residents fearing a potential wave of reprisal attacks and a total collapse of ongoing communal reconciliation efforts. Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Maxwell Ogiri, described the security situation around the scene of the attack as highly fragile and tense. He urged community members to exercise extreme restraint. "It is true that the state chairman of MACBAN was killed within Otukpo Local Government Area this afternoon. The killing has raised tension in the community and neighboring areas," Ogiri stated, adding that emergency security measures were being deployed to prevent a breakdown of law and order. Echoing the call for calm, the Chairman of Ohimini Local Government Area, Gabriel Adole, lamented that the attack directly undermines local efforts to end the cycle of violence. "I was told the meeting was fruitful... Unfortunately, I learnt that some gunmen ambushed his vehicle. It is highly unfortunate," Adole remarked. Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, expressed profound shock and sadness over the development, noting through his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, that the heinous act comes at a sensitive time when the administration is recording significant progress in restoring stability across the state's rural borders. National MACBAN Condemns 'Dastardly' Act Reacting to the assassination, the national leadership of MACBAN vehemently condemned the killing, characterizing it as a deliberate attempt by criminal elements to destabilize the region and derail peaceful coexistence. In an official statement signed by MACBAN National President, Baba Othman-Ngelzarma, the association noted that the circumstances surrounding the ambush raise serious concerns, especially given that Alhaji Mohammed was actively returning from an official state-backed peace mission. The association also revealed that about a week prior to the assassination, one of the late chairman's children, a practicing lawyer, had also been targeted and attacked in a separate village incident. MACBAN called on federal security agencies to conduct a transparent, thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice before local tensions boil over. Police Launch Full Scale Criminal Investigation The Benue State Police Command has officially confirmed the double homicide, stating that a high-powered investigation has been launched into the ambush. Speaking on behalf of the command in Makurdi, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, assured the public that tactical teams are scouring the border forests of Otukpo to identify and apprehend the killers. The police high command strictly warned against any forms of self-help or retaliatory violence, urging members of the public with credible intelligence regarding the identity or movement of the assailants to immediately forward information to investigators.
